Wilhelmsen Ships Service (WSS) has launched a 'Fuel Oil Quality initiative' to highlight problems with heavy fuel oil (HFO) and some of the more unexpected problems associated with increased use of marine distillates, and possible solutions.

It has also looked at the negative side-effects of slow steaming, a practice that has become more common as ship operators try to reduce fuel costs.

HFO has undergone an “overall decline” because of modern refining techniques that can be aggravated during shipping and blending activities to produce particular marine fuel specifications, according to Jonas Östlund, Product Marketing Manager, Marine Chemicals, WSS.
