The Shell Garage in Pennsylvania has stopped using one of its petrol tanks as a result.
A spokesman on behalf of the Shell garage said the company had talked to the customer and that the tank is no longer in use.
He told the Bath Chronicle: "We had a report of a customer having problems with petrol which they had bought here.
"It is something that we are investigating and we are awaiting a report from the experts.
