Fuel starvation occurs when there is kerosene, diesel or petrol in the tank, but a supply problem either fully or partially prevents it reaching the engine.
Possible causes for the phenomenon, which has caused many fatal crashes, including the 1967 Stockport air disaster in which 72 people died, include a blocked fuel filter and water- contaminated fuel.
