Cars still being wrecked by petrol stretching scam

It’s being reported that thousands of Euro worth of damage being done to petrol powered cars around the Galway area in recent weeks. The ‘petrol stretching’ scam is becoming a nationwide problem as unscrupulous retailers try to get more for their money.

In most cases the contaminated fuel causes irreversible damage to petrol engines and the cars would have to be written off.

Petrol acts as part of the cooling system in cars and the added kerosene prevents this which will cause the overheating of engine parts. This in turn could cause the engine pistons to melt causing thousands of Euro in damages.

The common indicators for petrol stretching that motorists should watch out for include a lack of power, engine ‘knocking’ and misfiring.
