In the mid 1990s, the introduction of Low Sulphur Diesel (LSD) led to major problems with a lack of lubricity in diesel fuel. The problem was that the process of hydro-treating, used to remove sulphur from the diesel fuel, also destroyed the lubricating qualities in the fuel. Even more importantly, the fuel refiners at the time, did not have access to an effective additive which could be used to replace the lost lubricity.
